This is how you look after your gold plated jewellery...
Being a jewellery fan can be an expensive hobby! Its that reason why most of the brands we work with predominantly use sterling silver as their base metal. Its a beautiful quality that is easy to look after and wear year after year with few allergies or tarnishing issues.
Our gold designer collections contain pieces that are both gold plated and gold filled. We love them because they give the aesthetic appeal of solid gold but for a whole lot less.
Whats the difference? Well, Gold-plated jewellery has a layer of gold over sterling silver, so when that layer wears down, the base metal is revealed. Gold-filled jewellery on the other hand, mixes gold with sterling silver, permanently bonding the metals together.

Buying plated jewellery needn’t be a worry. Its true that it needs a little bit more care than solid gold but if looked after well it can look beautiful for months or even years. And don’t forget; if worst comes to worst you can always have your jewellery re-plated. Still a huge saving on solid gold!
The things to remember are:
Try to remove your gold plated jewellery before sleeping, showering or bathing, swimming or playing sports where you’re likely to get sweaty! Excessive friction, water and especially sweat can make the gold wear much faster. Not much point wearing your jewellery to sleep. Enjoy your jewellery where everyone can see it and admire it (depending of course who you’re in bed with!).
AVOID spraying perfume directly onto your jewellery. Try and apply scent or body lotion before adding your favourite pieces and avoid the ares where your gold plated jewellery touches your skin. In general any extra chemical or oils that you apply to your skin are not going to help the longevity of your jewellery.
If it starts to look a bit grubby you can gently clean your plated jewellery with a cotton ball or a very soft cloth to remove any dust and dirt it has acquired. Gently rubbing the surface of your gold plated jewellery using a soft jewellery cloth also helps restore shine. Avoid specialist silver cleaning cloths though as these contain chemicals that will make the gold wear off more quickly!). If your jewellery needs more cleaning you can gently clean it with warm, soapy water.
If we’re going to get technical then its good to know that in general our designers tend to use the following quality; 1-2 microns for earrings which don’t get subjected to much friction, 2 microns for necklaces and around 3 - 5 microns for rings. A nice thick coating that will have longevity on the pieces that are subjected to the most wear.
